Adding a photo element to your activation is a great way to increase engagement and create user-generated content. Implementing some technology into your photo activations can make for photo-ops that would be impossible otherwise. Regardless, coming up with creative ideas is a little more difficult than just adding a photo backdrop or adding new technology. We compiled 5 of the most creative photo activation ideas to help you get out of that creative block.
Your Hoka Type
Hoka created an international campaign where fans took a quiz to decide their “Hoka Type” and then allowed them to take a unique photo. Fans took their photo and the background was automatically removed and replaced with a moving background specific to their Hoka Type as well as a blur to give the illusion of movement.
By using SceneSwap, Hoka was able to transport fans and give them a cool and unique photo experience. This ties in a few technologies to get an output photo that is visually stunning and highly sharable. See the photo here.
USAA Army vs Air Force
USAA created a photo op for the Navy vs Air Force football game celebrating the fans and superfans. Fans took a photo in front of a backdrop and filled in custom forms with their name, how many games they attended and their hometown. The final deliverable was a video profile showing their superfan status and welcoming them to Colorado Springs.
This used many custom fields to create a custom video that was slightly different for each of the fans making it fully unique person to person. Additionally, it was delivered as a video making for a very cool custom photo experience. See the photo here.
ComicCon State Farm
At ComicCon, fans of everything from comics to tv shows have the chance to dress up and interact with other megafans. State Farm wanted to celebrate this unique event by adding their own unique twist to the traditional photo-op. State Farm created an experience where fans were able to cartoon themselves and appear on the cover of their very own comic book. This photo didn’t just exist as a digital photo but it was also printed just like a real-life comic book.
This photo involved many different technologies to pull off. Beyond just the cartooning, there were also different custom backgrounds as well as different character models to choose from. All of this came together to create a very unique photo activation idea that related perfectly to ComicCon fans.
Trident Vibes x Sour Patch Kids Metaverse
All of the examples so far have involved fans interacting in the regular universe. Instead, Trident Vibes and Sour Patch Kids decided to take things into the metaverse. They created a massive model of the Sour Patch Kids dancing on a metaverse dance floor. Fans could take photos with the Sour Patch Kids and share them via social media using #ChewTheVibes. The metaverse photo activation allows Trident and Sour Patch Kids to reach a new audience of metaverse fans.
A metaverse photo engagement requires some extra steps from the other photo activation ideas. Activating in the metaverse required a whole digital build-out. While it may be slightly more work, the photo experiences in the metaverse are not limited to real-world restrictions. In the metaverse, you can take a picture in a volcano, at the deepest part of the ocean or in space with aliens – the possibilities are endless.
Target Team Selfie
One shortcoming of most photo activations is that you can only have 1 or 2 subjects at the most. In Target’s employee event, there was no such limitation. Users could create groups that many different people could add their selfie. Each member of the group could use all the different selfies and lay out their own composition with different backgrounds and overlays to create an extremely unique photo activation.
Target utilized Groupie – see how it works here. With this technology, each member could upload their selfie and have the background automatically removed. Each person had access to the group’s different photos as well as some Target branded overlays and images. Each member could resize and lay out every asset and build their own custom photo.
